98.1 FM BREAKING NEWS:  WEDNESDAY 4/8/20 MORNING RELEASE FROM THE CITY MANAGER

 Marco Island Public Pedestrian Beach Access to Remain Closed On Monday, April 6th the Marco Island City Council voted 4-3 for a limited reopening of one pedestrian access and one egress point to the Marco Island beach. The intention was to provide the opportunity for residents to be able to walk Marco Island’s wide beaches, as a means to be outside, get exercise, and seek relief from the stresses of this time of worldwide emergency, something that many island residents asked for. What has become apparent subsequently and immediately is an extremely high level of concern among Marco Island’s residents that any action with even the potential to increase visitor traffic is an action that puts them further at risk. It is clear that the social cost and community-wide anxiety triggered by the opening of even a single pedestrian beach access point is not worth the few walks on the beach it would provide for our residents. I am therefore announcing that under the authority granted by the Marco Island City Council in declaring a State of Emergency on March 16, 2020, and under Section 10- 6 of the City’s Civil Emergency Code, in consultation with City Council Chairman Erik Brechnitz, that the public pedestrian beach access points at Maple and Collier Boulevard and Winterberry Drive and Collier Boulevard will not reopen on April 13, and will remain closed through at least April 30, 2020 pending further City Council action. My preference would be that the City Council have the opportunity to reconsider this action as a body, but for that to happen would require further delay, and I am confident that the Council will agree that immediate action in this case is what is best for the Marco Island community.

The virus pandemic has put thousands of people out of work in Collier County. Food Pantries have been working overtime all over the county to help provide food for families and the need is probably going to get worse before it gets better. There are members of the family that are not being helped and that is their family pets. During times of human crisis, the silent victims are the pets. When people lose the ability to care for them, they are abandoned. There is nowhere for them to go. For the Love of Cats is determined to do everything possible to help families in need keep their precious furry family members by providing Dog and Cat food on Tuesdays from 2 pm to 4 pm at East Naples Community Park alongside Meals for Hope throughout the month of April and longer if necessary.

"We can't stand by and see pets abandoned for lack of food. Our furry friends are too valuable and their love can be life saving. We have to help them stay with their families." said Jan Rich, Founder.

For the Love of Cats is also providing cat and dog food to Our Daily Bread, the local food pantry on Marco Island, and helping Saving Grace Pet Food Bank in Naples.

FROM MARCO POLICE:

Governor DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-91 on April 1, 2020 in reference to Essential Services and Activities during the COVID-19 Emergency. The order was issued as a response to multiple State of Emergency and Public Health Emergency declarations associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the order, the following definitions are important: • Essential services are defined in the order according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and previous Executive Order 20-89. It should be noted, it does not prohibit individuals from working from home, it actually encourages it. • Essential activities include religious services; walking, biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, running, or swimming; caring for pets; and caring for or assisting loved ones and friends. This order also addresses “Safer at Home” which states that senior citizens (defined as over the age of 65) and individuals with a significant underlying condition (such as chronic lung disease, moderate-to-severe asthma, serious heart conditions, immunocompromised status, cancer, diabetes, severe obesity, renal failure and liver disease) shall stay at home and take all measures to limit the risk of exposure to COVID-19. It does not prohibit those from leaving their homes to obtain or provide essential services or essential activities. This order takes effect at 12:01am on April 3, 2020, and shall expire on April 30, 2020 unless extended by the Governor. As law enforcement officials we are required to uphold the Executive Order. We are confident that as individuals, responsible community partners, business owners and staff, you will comply with all aspects of the order. We will assist in educating the public through utilizing our social media and continuing to monitor activities in the community. It should be known that those who violate this order could face civil sanctions, fines, and / or criminal charges. It is through cooperation that we will minimize the number of COVID-related exposures and deaths – we are “Better Together”! • Continue to adhere to all Center for Disease Control and health official guidelines • Use social distancing and avoid gatherings of more than 10 people • Exercise personal responsibility Marco Island Police Department

98.1 FM BREAKING NEWS: THE MARCO CITY MANAGER WILL MAKE THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDATIONS TO CITY COUNCIL AT A MEETING SCHEDULED FOR 1 PM 3/31/20

1. Continue current actions that the City and Police are doing with particular emphasis immediately on locating visitors and enforcing the Executive Order related to selfquarantine;

2. Closure of all public beaches, either total closure or time-limited closure from 11am – 5pm

3. Closure of the Caxambas boat ramp (attachment A);

It is the assessment of City staff that these actions are consistent with actions taken by neighboring

social distancing guidelines. These three steps are achievable and will not create any further undue
burden on our residents, on essential workers coming to the island, and can be achieved with the

HERE IS A NEW UPDATE ON MARCO BEACHES AS OF 9 AM 3/22/20

98.1 FM UPDATE Let’s try and make this as plain as we can.

1) All beaches on Marco (excluding Residents beach which closed Friday until further notice ) are open to the public ( Collier County’s decree closing all county beaches doesn’t include Marco Island just like it didn’t include Naples who had to act on their own to close their beach ) but here’s the kicker:

2) All Marco Island PUBLIC access to the beaches as well as all Marco Island PUBLIC beach parking is closed .( public access and public beach parking on Marco Island is owned by Collier County ) Notice I said Public access.

3) If you have private access to the Marco beaches i.e. you live on the beach, are staying at a hotel located on the beach or arrive by boat or some other means that does not involve the public access mentioned above you can enjoy the beach with the exception of Resident’s beach which is closed altogether. If you gain access to the beach through private property you must have the property owner's prior approval.

4) If you go to the beach you can congregate in groups of ten or less but stay 6-10 feet away from each other.

5) All bars and taverns and restaurants in Florida are closed to patrons however, many on Marco are offering to deliver orders to your home and others are offering curb side pickup as well. We have a list else ware here on our Face Book page.

Following the lead of State and County officials, City of Marco Island has announced that effective at dusk 3/19/20 public beach access controlled by the City of Marco Island will be closed until further notice. Specifically, the two points impacted are Madeira public beach access and Crystal Shores public beach access. Closing public access points does not keep all citizens or residents off the beach; what it does accomplish is limiting the number of beach-goers which is consistent with the public health guidelines regarding social distancing and mass gathering under which we are all living. The City of Marco Island and Collier County remain in a declared State of Emergency. Public health is of utmost importance to the City of Marco Island.
