Marco Island, June 5, 2018: - Marco Island Center for the Arts invites the public to “Sea Life”an eye opening all mediumsjudged exhibition of unique, awe-inspiring, and rib tickling marine life and related objet d’artborn out of an artist’s playfulness and creative ideas. The judge for this exhibition is Jack O’Brien, curator at the Naples Art Association.

From the welcoming of the Art Center’s outdoorturtle sculpture, MissMiranda Tartuga with her long eyelashes and sassy headpiece, to stepping into the Lauritzen & Rush Galleries filled with the work of artists giving sea life an earthly space for fantasy and fun tales, this trip to “Sea Life” is a treat for all ages from 1 to 100.

The exhibition will be on display from June 4 - 26, 2018, Monday – Friday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The openingreception called Second Tuesday is from 5:30 – 7:00 pm on June 12th.  No reservations are required. There is a suggested $10 donation for non-members. 

 

Burmese pythons are established in South Florida. The FWC, along with several other state and federal agencies, is trying to control this nonnative snake. You can help FWC and other agencies manage these species by reporting sightings of Burmese pythons.  This information helps us assess the distribution and abundance of nonnative species in Florida, detect the arrival of new exotic species, or identify range expansions by exotics that are already here.

You can call the FWC’s Exotic Species Hotline at 888-IVE-GOT1 (888- 483-4681) and report a Burmese python. The hotline is answered part-time by a live operator and has a voicemail system that will prompt you for information about your sighting and your contact information if the operator is unable to answer the call.

 

 

 

 

 Marco Island Center for the Arts is having an exclusive sale of the work of well recognized Marco and Naples area photographer R. Clark Lindberg. He has been engaged in various photographic mediums for more than 50 years. The Art Center has framed original photographs, giclee prints and notecards that are 50% off the gallery retail price.

Mr. Lindberg is the former president of the Marco Island Foundation for the Arts and the Naples Artcrafters. He has recently relocated out of Florida.

For over 20 years, Abby Yetter has performed in over 50 professional, regional and community theaters across the country.  She has held the lead role in Broadway’s best musicals including Peter Pan, Annie and Oliver Twist.  Ms. Yetter was also chosen as one of the only two mezzo-soprano classical vocalists selected for the five-week Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts residential program at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA.

Abby has appeared on Law & Order, acted in commercials and has done voiceover work. Sheis a classically trained opera singer who has sung jazz from an early age. Ms. Yetter gives private lessons to vocalists from her home studio.

Who was Barron Collier?

 

Read about the amazing man who bought over 1 million acres of South Florida land and had a county named after him.

 

Besides completing the Tamiami Trail across the swamp and developing the Everglades City, he also owned a group of resort hotels which attracted the rich and famous to Useppa, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Boca Grande, Lakeland, Bradenton, Punta Gorda, Sarasota, and the most renown one, the Rod & Gun Club. But that’s not all -- he operated a telephone service, published newspapers, and provided transportation on ships and buses.

 

And, he was a big player during the Roaring Twenties in New York City where he hobnobbed with important people and reduced traffic accidents with his “Aunty J. Walker” campaign. He had grown up in Memphis and made his fortune in streetcar advertising which he used to promote charitable causes such as the Boy Scouts.

 

A new book The Story of Barron Collier by local historian Marya Repko summarizes it all for younger readers (and older ones who like a quick synopsis) just in time for holiday gift-giving.
