April 28, 2018, marks the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Tamiami Trail and the 20th Birthday of the Museum of the Everglades!
The Tamiami Trail (from Tampa to Miami) was a brilliant engineering feat, conquering the once impenetrable Everglades and stands out as a picturesque link between the two coasts of Florida. Barron Gift Collier invested much of his personal wealth in building the Tamiami Trail, a gigantic project to link Florida’s east and west coasts with a modern highway across the Everglades. The road was completed and opened to traffic on April 26, 1928.
Establishing a museum was the dream of the Everglades Women’s Club which eventually evolved into the Friends of the Museum of the Everglades, under the leadership of the late Pauline Reeves, for whom the museum’s front gallery is named. The Museum of the Everglades was opened 20 years ago on the 70thanniversary of the Trail.
We will also be commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Everglades City in 1953 and the 95th Anniversary of the establishment of Collier County in 1923.
The celebrations will start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, at the Museum of the Everglades, located at 105 West Broadway in Everglades City, Florida. Festivities will include a parade, live music, food, and fun for all the family as well as a walking tour of historic buildings and the “old timers” storytelling. This event is free and open to the public.

Who was Barron Collier?
Read about the amazing man who bought over 1 million acres of South Florida land and had a county named after him.
Besides completing the Tamiami Trail across the swamp and developing the Everglades City, he also owned a group of resort hotels which attracted the rich and famous to Useppa, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Boca Grande, Lakeland, Bradenton, Punta Gorda, Sarasota, and the most renown one, the Rod & Gun Club. But that’s not all -- he operated a telephone service, published newspapers, and provided transportation on ships and buses.
And, he was a big player during the Roaring Twenties in New York City where he hobnobbed with important people and reduced traffic accidents with his “Aunty J. Walker” campaign. He had grown up in Memphis and made his fortune in streetcar advertising which he used to promote charitable causes such as the Boy Scouts.
A new book The Story of Barron Collier by local historian Marya Repko summarizes it all for younger readers (and older ones who like a quick synopsis) just in time for holiday gift-giving. It has a plethora of historic photos and suggestions for Further Reading. To order online, see www.ecity-publishing.com or for more information, call the author at (239) 695-2905.
